Cinedigm Digital Cinema and National Geographic will co-distribute the documentary "Life in a Day," a collaboration of Ridley Scott's Scott Free UK and YouTube, the companies announced Wednesday.
Scott and director Kevin Macdonald will host a "virtual premiere" of the movie at about 400 movie theaters across the nation.
Roughly 100 of those theaters will be wired so Scott and Macdonald can participate in a question-and-answer session with audience members all over the country after the movie.
The project is as unusual as the premiere.
Macdonald, who directed "The Last King of Scotland," asked YouTube users to submit videos all shot on July 24, 2010. He received more than 80,000 videos — more than 4,500 hours worth — and stitched them together into a 90-minute film.
The premiere is scheduled for this July 24. The movie goes into wider release July 29.
