MPI Pictures, a division of the producer-distributor MPI Media Group, has acquired all U.S. rights to “Thérèse Desqueyroux,” the final film from the French director Claude Miller, the company announced in Toronto on Friday.
Starring Audrey Tautou, the film is based on the novel of the same name by François Mauriac, and was the closing-night film of this year’s Cannes Film Festival. Previously filmed in 1962 by Georges Franju, the drama centers on the title character, a beautiful young woman who goes to extreme measures to escape her suffocating marriage.
A theatrical release in major markets is planned for the spring of 2013, to be followed by a VOD and DVD release.
The deal was negotiated by Marie Therese Guirgis, head of distribution of MPI Pictures, and Gregory Chambet, VP international sales and acquisitions of TF1 International.
“We're honored to share the great director Claude Miller's masterful final film with a U.S. audience. Audrey Tautou has never been better,” said Guirgis.
