CNN Edges Fox News Among New Year’s Eve Viewers

Anderson Cooper and Kathy Griffin draw 3.04 million viewers to ring in 2017

“New Year’s Eve Live with Anderson Cooper & Kathy Griffin” averaged over 3 million total viewers for CNN, edging rival Fox News as Americans counted down to 2017.

CNN’s 3.04 million viewers from 11 p.m. through 12:30 a.m. ET was enough to make its New Year’s special the most-watched cable news show of the evening, compared to 2.75 million viewers for Fox News during the same time span. CNN’s broadcast gained 20 percent over last year’s version.

The Turner network averaged 1.29 million viewers among the key demo of adults age 25-54, compared to 734,000 demo viewers for Fox News. MSNBC lagged behind in both categories, averaging only 170,000 total viewers and 58,000 in the key demo.

As for the entire night’s coverage from 8 p.m. through 12:30 a.m., Fox News edged CNN win total viewers, 1.98 million compared to 1.90 million, respectively. CNN won the demo during this time period, averaging 768,000 A25-54 viewers compared to 506,000 for Fox News.

During CNN’s coverage, Don Lemon got his ear pierced on live TV, downing a shot beforehand. It didn’t necessarily look like his first drink of the evening, either. Earlier, the reporter and studio host had been debating with Brooke Baldwin whether he should get a piercing or a tattoo. Griffin pushed for a nipple piercing, while Cooper clearly wanted nothing to do with any of it.

Later, the ear-bedazzled Lemon told no one in particular that he “might be open to a relationship” in 2017.
