After 2011’s quick sellout and rampant counterfeiting, festival announces plans to stage entire 2012 festival twice, featuring the same acts each time
Organizers of the Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival are doing what many acts do when a gig sells out quickly: they're adding another show.
In Coachella's case, though, the festival announced on Tuesday that the 2012 installment of the festival will feature an entire second weekend — not a weekend with different artists, but one with the same acts, designed to give more people the ability to see the same show.
"We will attempt to produce two identical festival weekends," said a message posted on the Coachella website. "That means same lineup, same art, same place, different people."
The move was necessitated, the festival said, when passes for 2011's three-day weekend sold out much faster than anticipated, resulting in a flourishing secondary market for scalpers and counterfeiters.
That festival, which featured the Arcade Fire, Kings of Leon and Kanye West, among others, sold out in six days and drew nearly 100,000 people each day to the Empire Polo Grounds in Indio, California.
Although the promoter Goldenvoice will not announce the 2012 lineup for some time, tickets for the festival's two weekends will go on sale for one week beginning this Friday at Coachella.com.
Patrons who buy the $269 weekend passes during that period will be able to pay in full, or spread their payments out by putting 10 percent down and making eight equal monthly payments.
Typically, Coachella tickets are not put on sale until the lineup is announced.
The 2012 Coachella will take place on April 13 through 15 and April 20 through 22.
