"I personally believe that (3D) is the future," director Robert Zemeckis told an audience that had waited all night for Comic-Con's first-ever 3D presentation. "I'm excited about it because I think it's a totally immersive way to see movies."

Kicking off the convention's first event in Hall H at Con on Thursday, filmmakers Zemeckis and Tim Burton and the cast and crew from Disney's "Tron" remake gathered to unveil previews from their new films.

If anything could top the opening-morning panel on 3D in Hall H, with a surprise appearance, by Johnny Depp, it was the panel that followed on Summit Entertainment’s upcoming slate.

“Upcoming” as in “The Twilight Saga: New Moon.”

Get ready for “Avatar Day.”

Having kept his 3D sci-fi adventure under wraps for so long, James Cameron is going public in a unprecedently big way.

On Aug. 21, Fox will take over as many 3D and IMAX theaters as possible worldwide to show 15 free minutes of the long-awaited film.

The director announced the marketing ploy, along with a 24-minute preview of “Avatar,” Thursday afternoon, continuing a day of big studio fanfare in Hall H.

After debuting at Cannes, Terry Gilliam's "The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus" got its first stateside preview in Hall H at Comic-Con Thursday afternoon to an audience eager to catch a glimpse of Heath Ledger's final performance.

It began with a tribute to Terry Gilliam called "Behind the Mirror," which showed brief snippets of his films like "Brazil" and "The Meaning of Life." In the film, Gilliam talks about the world of Parnassus, with cast members like Tom Waits waxing poetic about the director.

Disney used its panel at Comic-Con on Friday morning to tout its upcoming slate of animated films -- from it's newest hand-drawn musical "The Frog and the Princess" to announcing the studio would release the original "Beauty and the Beast" in 3D.

The panel also hosted famed Japanese animator Hiyao Miyazaki's, whose "Ponyo" will get its American release in August.

New trends in animation and technology continued to be unveiled at Comic-Con as Focus Features presented a panel Friday afternoon spotlighting its CG-animated film "9."

Shane Acker's feature-length film was developed from his short, which was nominated for an Academy Award in 2005. The director unveiled a trailer in which nine "stichpunks," which resemble funky rag dolls, who exist after the destruction of Earth.

An exclusive four-minute trailer from the not-yet-finished apocalyptic thriller "Legion" was unveiled at Comic-Con Friday afternoon, showing a desolate desert town diner where a white-haired old woman warns of destruction and transforms into an evil creature.
