Reached for comment by TheWrap, Gibson's attorney, Blair Berk, released the following statement: "I know from almost 20 years as a criminal defense lawyer that sometimes justice can come for a client at too high a personal price. That is particularly so for Mel, whose right to due process can only be exercised in this case with an enormous media circus attached. An attorney for The Weinstein Company said that they would countersue Protocol Pictures for the $500,000.
"The studio paid them because they said they were going to go public with horrendously false accusations," said Weinstein attorney Bert Fields. "They held off. Now they've sued. So we will sue them out here to get back the money, as well as money paid for producing and directing services."
Fields said that the director and producer declined to follow the directions of The Weinstein Company, and had to be replaced. The suit will seek to reclaim that money.

A literary scout says she found “Twilight” and “Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief,” and now that they’ve inspired hit films, she wants to be paid.
In a breach of contract suit filed Thursday in Los Angeles Superior Court, Nanette Shipley claims that she discovered the young adult books for Maverick Films. The production company then set the projects up with studios.

David Bergstein may finally be out of options and time.
Citing a "willful failure to comply," Federal Court Judge Barry Russell placed the three remaining companies run by the controversial film financier into bankruptcy on Wednesday.

Lohan will back in court on Feb. 23. to face the charge, from a $2,500 necklace that she allegedly took from a Venice, Calif. boutique on Jan. 22, which carries a sentence of one year in state prison.
Judge Keith Schwartz set bail in the felony grand theft charge at $20,000 and revoked Lohan's probation for her 2007 DUI, with a bail for that set at $20,000. The judge also told Lohan to keep out of trouble and that "if you violate the law, I will remand you and there will be no bail."
