Oscar Ballots Due Today -- 10 Shockers That Could Happen

Ballots are due back at PricewaterhouseCoopers by the end of the day on Friday, with a surprising number of Academy members I've spoken to in recent days still weighing their choices.
The accountants will begin their work soon, and the results will be revealed early on the morning of Jan. 24. Parties will come to a screeching halt courtesy of new campaign rules; pundits and prognosticators will either brag about their accuracy, or change the subject.
And while most of the nominations will probably go according to plan, there will be a few surprises that morning.

Comedians Paul Scheer and Rob Huebel hosted the festivities, which they called "the ninth most exciting night in Hollywood." The movie about movies -- "The Artist" -- won top honors in the picture and director categories, while "The Help" took CCMA for Best Actress (Davis), Best Supporting Actress (Octavia Spencer) and Best Acting Ensemble.

The most drastic change is the elimination of a committee system in the Documentary Feature category. Instead, all branch members will be eligible to vote in the nominating process, and the entire Academy will be permitted to vote for the winner, without the previous requirement that they see all five nominees in a theatrical setting.

Martin Scorsese Receives His 2nd DGA Nomination This Week

Scorsese, who now has 10 DGA nominations, was honored for the two-part HBO film "George Harrison: Living in the Material World." On Monday, he was nominated in the feature category for directing "Hugo."
A DGA spokesperson told TheWrap that she could not find any record of a director being nominated in both categories in the same year.

The film, which is written, directed and co-prooduced by "We Live in Public" director Timoner, is based on the life of the photographer Robert Mapplethorpe and will star James Franco in the title role.
In addition, four other narrative films and five documentaries will also receive $15,000 grants from TAA, as well as the opportunity to participate in an extensive program offering year-round support and resources to help finish the films.
