Good Morning, Cannes: Will the Boo Birds Be Out for 'The Great Gatsby?'

The Grand Theatre Lumiere will reverberate with the sound of booing.
Oh, most of the Cannes audience will most likely applaud Luhrmann’s amped-up take on the F. Scott Fitzgerald classic. But scattered (and occasionally not-so-scattered) boos are a time honored Cannes tradition, and it’s hard to imagine that a few audience members won’t jeer the extravagant artifice of this “Gatsby.”
Then again, a few catcalls will just put Luhrmann in some august company.
In fact, the...

It didn't have anything as galvanic as last year's winner, "The Tree of Life," or as Oscar-friendly as another 2011 entry, "The Artist," and it didn't prompt any notable bidding wars or buying frenzies.
But it was a solid 11 days of movie-going and deal-making, with an unassailably popular winner and enough controversies thrown in to keep Cannes aficionados happy.
It began with complaints over the complete absence of female directors in the main competition, but neither that nor any other fuss rose to the level of Lars von Trier's shenanigans last year.

May, 27, 2012 10:52 am | Comments On #Amour, Cannes, cannes film festival, Michael Haneke, Movies, Palme d'OrMichael Haneke's quiet and emotional "Amour" has won the Palme d'Or at the 2012 Cannes Film Festival, the Cannes jury announced on Sunday.
A favorite of Cannes viewers from the moment it debuted at the festival a week ago, "Amour" was considered one of the favorites for the Palme. Haneke won in 2009 for his previous film, "The White Ribbon"; this victory makes Haneke only the second director to win the top Cannes award for back-to-back films.
Bille August also did it for "Pelle the Conqueror" and "The Best Intentions" in 1988 and 1992. August, though, made a TV-miniseries version of the latter film before turning it into the feature.
"Amour" follows...

May, 27, 2012 8:58 am | Comments On #Cannes, cannes film festival, Holy Motors, independent film, indies, indomina, Leos Carax, MoviesThe Indomina Group has acquired U.S. distribution rights to Leos Carax's "Holy Motors," one of the strangest, most divisive but most acclaimed films to screen in the main competition at this year's Cannes Film Festival.
The wildly experimental film drew scattered boos but also wild enthusiasm when it screened midway through the festival. The chronicle of a man who spends a day riding around town in a limousine, seemingly changing identities as he goes, it is considered a strong candidate for the Palme d'Or or other awards that will be handed out at the closing ceremony on Sunday.
The film stars Michel Piccoli, Denis Lavant, Eva Mendes and Kylie Minogue.
