You can't call what happened at the Golden Globes Awards on Sunday night any real measure of redemption or revenge for Ben Affleck, because the "Argo" director would no doubt trade in his two Globes for a chance to win in those same categories at the Academy Awards in six weeks.
Still, the victories for Affleck and his film were satisfying after a rough few days that began on Thursday morning, when Academy Awards voters denied him what was considered a sure nomination in the Oscar Best Director...

The Academy tried its best to kill the Golden Globes, but – imagine this – the show will go on at the Beverly Hilton on Sunday night.
For the first time, the Globes will take place after Oscar nominations have already been announced, early in a month-long period between the time the noms are revealed and the day when voting begins.
The Academy's official stance is that its nominations were moved up by more than a week to give members more time to see the nominated films, but...

In the rare case of guild nominations announced after the Oscar nominations, the American Cinema Editors also honored the dramas "Lincoln," "Life of Pi" and "Skyfall" and the comedies or musicals "The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel," "Moonrise Kingdom," "Silver Linings Playbook" and "Ted."

January, 10, 2013 6:46 pm | Comments On #Academy Awards, Awards, Emma Stone, oscars, Seth MacFarlaneOscar show producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron now know what they have to work with.
They have five songs, at least four of which could be sung by big stars. They have nine Best Picture nominees, four of which are comfortably past $100 million in domestic box office and one of which will be there soon.
And they have a host who can turn even one of Oscar's most familiar rituals into a standup comedy routine.
Obviously, there was a reason why AMPAS President Hawk Koch abdicated the usual presidential duties and let Seth MacFarlane host Thursday morning's nominations announcement: To send a message that these Oscars will be different.
Before he introduced his co-presenter...

January, 10, 2013 2:31 pm | Comments On #Academy Awards, Awards, Jessica Chastain, Kathryn Bigelow, oscars, zero dark thirty"It's bittersweet for me," said Jessica Chastain of her Best Actress nomination for "Zero Dark Thirty." "I'm so excited, but I also feel the shock of Kathryn not being nominated."
Kathryn, of course, is "ZDT" director Kathryn Bigelow, whose failure to receive a Best Director nomination was one of the major surprises of the Oscar nominations. Bigelow's film is up for five awards, including Best Picture, Best Original Screenplay (Mark Boal) and Best Actress (Chastain), but its director was left out of a baffling category that also overlooked Ben Affleck for "Argo" and Tom Hooper for "Les Miserables."
"The film is so fearless and bold...
Will the Oscar Audience Sing 'Happy Birthday' to Emmanuelle Riva?
January, 10, 2013 11:46 am | Comments On #Academy Awards, Amour, Awards, Daniel Day-Lewis, denzel washington, Emmanuelle Riva, Jennifer Lawrence, oscars, Quvenzhané WallisHere's an idea for an Oscar-show musical number: All 3,000 people in the Dolby Theatre singing "Happy Birthday" to Best Actress nominee Emmanuelle Riva.
The French actress, who burst onto the scene with "Hiroshima Mon Amour" in 1959, has just received her first Oscar nomination for "Amour," 54 years after her debut. And Riva has extra reason to celebrate, because the 85th Academy Awards falls on her 86th birthday.
Riva was born on February 24, 1927, a month after Louis B. Mayer founded the Academy and two years before Oscars were first handed out. Her nomination at the age of 85 years and 321 days makes her the oldest Best Actress nominee...
Oscar Analysis: Yes, 'Lincoln' Is on Top, But Watch Out for 'Silver Linings Playbook' and 'Life of Pi'
January, 10, 2013 7:58 am | Comments On #Academy Awards, Amour, Ang Lee, argo, Awards, Ben Affleck, David O. Russell, Kathryn Bigelow, Les Miserables, Life of Pi, Lincoln, Michael Haneke, oscars, Silver Linings Playbook, Steven Spielberg, Tom HooperDid Academy voters just clear a path to the stage for Steven Spielberg and "Lincoln?"
Or did they indicate that Spielberg's historical drama has unexpectedly serious challengers not in the two CIA-themed dramas expected to be best-pic contenders, but in David O. Russell's delicious bipolar comedy "Silver Linings Playbook" or Ang Lee's visionary "Life of Pi?"
With a stunning set of nominations highlighted by a Best Director category that almost no one could have envisioned, Oscar voters upended conventional wisdom and placed a huge obstacle in the way of Ben Affleck's "Argo" and Kathryn Bigelow's "Zero Dark Thirty," as well as Tom Hooper...
