NBCUniversal to Buy Stake in AllThingsD Founders’ New Venture

Walt Mossberg and Kara Swisher will found a new site after ending their relationship with News Corp.

Walt Mossberg and Kara Swisher, the technology journalists who founded AllThingsD, have enlisted support for their new venture from NBCUniversal, which will take a minority stake, an individual with knowledge of the negotiations told TheWrap.

Both Swisher and NBCUniversal declined to comment on the impending deal.

Mossberg and Swisher founded AllThingsD in 2007 after staging several successful conferences of the same name. The company now stages several conferences each year, but the flagship conference has long attracted the biggest names in tech and media.

With the support of parent company Dow Jones, for whom both had worked at the Wall Street Journal, Mossberg and Swisher then built the publication into one of the most respected websites covering Silicon Valley and the media industry.

Yet the parties announced two months ago that they would not continue their partnership. Dow Jones, the News Corp. subsidiary that oversees the Wall Street Journal, owns the D brand and its archives.

Mossberg and Swisher have not announced a name for their new venture.

It is not yet clear how large a stake Comcast will be taking. It operates the business-focused TV channel CNBC, one of myriad properties under its control.
