‘Community’ Star McHale to Play Alba’s Hubby in ‘Spy Kids 4’

Robert Rodriguez is returning to write and direct Dimension’s reboot of the popular franchise

"Community" star Joel McHale continues his foray into features, as the "Soup" host is in final negotiations to star in Dimension's "Spy Kids 4," reports Variety.

McHale will play a lucky, spy-hunting reporter and father who is married to Jessica Alba in the series reboot from writer-director Robert Rodriguez.

While I'm not the biggest fan of this franchise (or maybe it's just the idea of Rodriguez passing on other projects more suited to his talents in order to keep this money train rolling along), the gig should help expand McHale's brand to a younger demographic, and you can't blame the guy for seizing the opportunity to play house with Alba.

McHale was last seen on the big screen as an FBI agent in Steven Soderbergh's "The Informant," and he spent the summer shooting two major comedies — "What's Your Number?" with Anna Faris and Chris Evans, and "The Big Year" with Jack Black, Owen Wilson and Steve Martin.

The "Spy Kids" series has grossed a combined $360 million worldwide, and the fourth installment is scheduled for release on Aug. 19, 2011.
