Composers and Lyricists Drop Unionization Effort

The Assn. of Media Composers and Lyricists wanted to represent composers and songwriters, who are considered independent contractors

After two years, the Assn. of Media Composers and Lyricists has dropped its effort to unionize composers and songwriters.

It had been meeting with studios and with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers.

An individual close to the producers told TheWrap Friday that composers and lyricists are considered independent contractors under federal law, and thus are not permitted to unionize.

The individual said that the AMPTP made efforts to figure out a way to provide composers and lyricists with health benefits, but that independent contractors are barred by federal law from participating in industry health plans.
