'Copper' Canceled by BBC America

Sorry, “Copper” fans: the end is near.

BBC America has decided not to go forward with the drama after its second season, which concludes Sunday at 10 p.m.

BBC America general manager Perry Simon made the announcement on Thursday, noting that the series has been “a fascinating and exciting experience.”

Simon added that the series had reached “a fitting moment to conclude” its run. (The series,  which starred Tom Weston-Jones as an Irish immigrant cop in 1860s New York,  explored the effects of the American Civil War and began its second season on the brink of Abraham Lincoln's assassination.)

“The opportunity to work with Tom Fontana, Barry Levinson, Will Rokos, Thomas Kelly and the extraordinary cast and crew on this journey is one that we are extremely proud of,” Simon said. “Their vision to re-tell the immigrant experience through the melting pot of New York City was an original and fresh idea that melded well with the essence of BBC AMERICA's programming.

“After 23 episodes, with Lincoln dead and the nation starting to heal, it seems a fitting moment to conclude this American story.”

So disappointing. Loved this show. Actors and actresses did a great job.

Noooooo!! This show is so good! There is so much more to work with regarding the history of the Irish in NY! Please don't cancel!!!!

If you want someone working inside/outside the parameters of the laws of the time, since Copper is not available anymore, try Hell on Wheels. It's not bad but I'm afraid that when I find something I like, (Copper for instance?) they tend to get cancelled LOL

Another great show like Copper is Ripper Street. It was said to have been cancelled but I found that it was renewed for a second season. Now if only we could get the clowns as BBC to renew Copper. It was one of the top quality shows ever on TV. It deserves to be brought back.

Damned; I loved that show. They could have made at least one more season to make a round end.

Can we petition this?! How can BBC general manager say Lincoln being shot is a fitting moment to conclude the story? The next several decades saw huge changes in the U.S. and NYC. And I've grown to care about what happens to these complex characters. It's also a great history lesson.

“a fitting moment to conclude”?!? Hmm, the major character faces a major life/career choice and one of the major characters, who is pregnant, may or may not be dead (or a murderer), but BBA's GM calls it “a fitting moment to conclude”. I bet the same guy thought Rocky V was a good place to end the Rocky saga or that The Godfather 3 was the best of the Godfather trilogy.

This is the first show that I find myself upset that it has been cancelled. I thought the writers did a great job of creating story lines for several characters that kept me wanting to learn more. I'm holding my breathe hoping that the executives change their mind and renew the show for several more years “due to popular demand.”
