"Lord of the Rings" star will appear on Broadway opposite Condola Rashad
Producers of a new Broadway revival of "Romeo and Juliet" gave audiences a hint of just what kind of star-crossed lovers Orlando Bloom and Condola Rashad will make.
The show released the first image of the actors on Monday — it's an arresting shot that shows the pair, outfitted all in white and gazing adoringly into each other's eyes.
The production, directed by five-time Tony Award nominee David Leveaux ("Nine"), is Bloom's Broadway debut. Rashad, who is the daughter of "The Cosby Show" star Phylicia Rashad, is a stage veteran and has been nominated for Tony Awards for her work in "Stick Fly" and "The Trip to Bountiful."
The revival of "Romeo and Juliet" marks the first time the tragic romance has hit the Great White Way in 36 years.
Race will play a big role in this production. In a twist on the story of feuding families, in this new production the members of the Montague household will be white, and the Capulet family will be black.
"Romeo and Juliet" will play at Broadway's Richard Rodgers Theatre. Previews begin Aug. 24, and the official opening is scheduled for Sept. 19.
