Cannes: Brad Pitt Says 'Killing Them Softly' Isn't Anti-Obama, But It Is Political
May, 22, 2012 3:33 pm | Comments On #Andrew Dominik, Brad Pitt, Cannes, cannes film festival, film festivals, Killing them Softly, MoviesAndrew Dominik's gangster movie "Killing Them Softly" has been interpreted by Cannes reviewers as being about the failures of capitalism, an attack on America and a slap at the failed promise of Barack Obama's presidency -- but at a Cannes press conference on Tuesday afternoon, Brad Pitt insisted that only part of that is true.
Viewers are wrong to read anti-Obama sentiment into the movie because of the way it juxtaposes his optimistic Democratic National Convention speech of 2008 with a landscape of greed and violence, he said.
The footage, he said, was used not "as a cynical look back at a statement of failure, but as a real expression of hope."

May, 22, 2012 8:09 am | Comments On #Andrew Dominik, Brad Pitt, Cannes, cannes film festival, film festivals, James Gandolfini, Killing them Softly, MoviesIn the first few scenes of Andrew Dominik’s masterful "Killing Them Softly," you think you are in the presence of two idiots who have no idea what they’re doing. They’re being ordered to pull off a robbery. They’re the kind of guys who never figured out how stupid they were, and those kind of guys don’t last long in crime novels. You know they’re marked men for their stupidity alone.
This is a film that peels open slowly like an onion – stylized violence, piercing dialogue, the occasional blood spatter set to a familiar tune, a la Scorsese. But it was never meant to be a Scorsese film, nor a Tarantino film, though it makes you think it is from the first few scenes.

The Weinstein Company's unveiling of footage from Quentin Tarantino's "Django Unchained," David O. Russell's "The Silver Linings Playbook" and Paul Thomas Anderson's "The Master" quickly overshadowed the latest from 90-year-old French icon Alain Resnais, and even got people to stop talking about the rain for a while.

May, 21, 2012 2:04 pm | Comments On #Cannes, cannes film festival, Movies, Prada, Roman Polanski, TessRoman Polanski came to Cannes on Monday to show an old film, and also to debut a new one.
But the new Polanski film is an oddity in the controversial director's career: It's an ad for Prada, though Polanski described it as "an anti-ad" afterwards.
The short, which screened before a restored version of Polanski's 1979 film "Tess," features Helena Bonham Carter as a Prada-wearing patient and Ben Kingsley as a psychiatrist who finds himself distracted by the beauty of the purple fur coat his patient has hung on a rack.
