Deadline Hires USA Today’s Lieberman as Executive Editor

Penske poaches 17-year veteran of paper to cover big media, corporate finance for Nikki Finke

Deadline.com has hired David Lieberman, a 17-year veteran of the USA Today, as an executive editor, Penske Media announced on Monday.

Lieberman will cover "big media corporate finance and technological convergence" — part of what Deadline says will be "a major expansion of Deadline’s journalism about the media and entertainment business."

At USA Today, Lieberman was most recently the senior media reporter charged with running the paper's "CEO Forum."

He'll work out of Penske's New York office. Lieberman is Deadline's sixth new hire in the last two years.

Penske Media was formerly known as Mail.com Media Corp.

The last Deadline acquisition was Michael Speier, formerly Variety and TheWrap, who was brought in to serve as managing editor of Deadline in September.

According to individuals close to Penske Media, Speier has now taken over the general manager role at another company property, Movieline, which was recently vacated by Charles Runnette, who's now working for MTV.

Here's Nikki Finke's statement on the Lieberman hire:

"I've long admired David Lieberman's journalism at USA Today not just because he's so knowledgeable and well-sourced and accurate but also because he can explain very complex issues in an engaging and readable way. Ever since I first invited him to breakfast 15 years ago in NYC and we quickly became bicoastal friends, I've had this premonition that we'd work together at some point. And that time is now. I feel incredibly lucky that a media and entertainment business expert of Lieberman's caliber is joining the Deadline team."
