With the summer tentpole flicks rolled up and the Emmys now less than two weeks away, the champagne is starting to chill for an eventful September. However, with most of the town returning from a “10-day” weekend today, the summer party circuit limped in to a finish as light as this weekend’s box office.

David Arquette recruited the cast of new ABC show “Cougartown” (featuring wife Courteney Cox, at left ) to join him in launching a month-long campaign against hunger on Monday. Now that it’s technically no longer bathing-suit weather, Arquette pals like Zach Braff (pictured below right with Arquette) considered hopping on the Feeding America/Cheesecake Factory bus that left L.A .to hit a different outlet of the hit franchise for each of September’s 30 days. New mom Busy Phillips (flanking co-star Cox) shared in the sweets and helped launch the campaign from the nation’s largest hunger relief charity.

On Wednesday, Jessica Alba, Emma Roberts and Jessica Lowndes hit the Sunset Tower hotel to celebrate the graduation of fashion blog “WhoWhatWear” from pixels to paper. Cofounders/Authors Katherine Power and Hillary Kerr debuted their book “Celebrity and Runway Style for Real Life” that grew out of the popular website. Fellow author Lauren Conrad thumbed through it on site, as guests pointed out that Brent Bolthouse represented “the only straight man on the dance floor” at the fashion heavy soiree. A late night on the dance floor predictably did nothing to hinder the nightlife kingpin from producing a three-hour memorial service for close friend DJ A.M. at the Palladium the next evening.

Outside the U.S., summer was still in full swing as the Venice Film Festival got under way. Director Werner Herzog (at left) boated in with actors Eva Mendes and Nicolas Cage to make the Italian waterways their promotional “port of call” on Friday. The trio’s remake, “'Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans," hits stateside screens before Thanksgiving.

Closer to home for back to school, the campus oriented ladies of Summit Entertainment’s thriller “Sorority Row” hit the Arclight on Thursday night. Demi Moore came to support daughter Rumer Willis’ second consecutive feature in a college setting (following 2007’s “The House Bunny”). Dollhouse’s Miracle Laurie welcomed reality alums like Audrina Patridge (“The Hills”) and Jamie Chung (MTV’s “The Real World”) to the scripted world. At the after-party, the disproportionate attention paid to Patridge, the "Hills" cast member-come-actress, had some rival PR reps miffed. (“Audrina’s in the movie for like five minutes.”) Usually one to spin the tunes such festivities, Caroline D’Amore got the night off to enjoy the pre-Labor day festivities with castmates.
