Just when it seemed that the 64th Emmy Awards were going to be every bit as routine as Jon Stewart suggested when he was bleeped while saying that space aliens would one day find out "just how predictable these [bleep]ing awards are," Emmy voters made Showtime's first-year drama "Homeland" one of the night's big winners.

The Outstanding Drama Series award didn't come as a complete surprise, given that the show had already won Emmys for lead actors Claire Danes and Damian Lewis and for its writing.

"Modern Family" picked up its third consecutive statue for Outstanding Comedy Series as Emmy voters decided to keep it in the family Sunday night.

"Modern Family," which looks at several generations in a (mostly) functional Southern California family, beat out stiff competition from past nominees like "The Big Bang Theory," "Curb Your Enthusiasm" and "30 Rock," as well as newcomers "Girls" and "Veep."

Claire Danes' fearless performance as a brilliant, but mentally unstable CIA analyst in Showtime's "Homeland" was a hit with Emmy voters.

Danes received the Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama statue Sunday night, beating out Michelle Dockery ("Downton Abbey"), Julianna Margulies ("The Good Wife"), Glenn Close ("Damages"), Elisabeth Moss ("Mad Men") and Kathy Bates ("Harry's Law").
