Asking Winners to “Go Long”

Never in the history of award shows has a director asked winners to “expand” their acceptance speeches.  A half-hour into the show,  at 5:38 p.m., producers announced, “We’re running a little bit light.” They offered suggestions to fill time, including having more than one...

Quvenzhane Wallis made history Thursday when she became the youngest actress to be nominated for an Oscar.

The nine-year-old Best Actress nominee for “Beasts of the Southern Wild” (who was six when the film was shot) faces off against Jennifer Lawrence, Jessica Chastain, Naomi Watts and Emmanuelle Riva -- the oldest Best Actress nominee at 85 -- at the 85th Academy Awards next month.

The question that awaits is: Will the world pronounce Wallis' phonetically challenging name correctly? There’s not much time for red carpet hosts to practice, because she hits the arrivals line at Thursday night’s Critics Choice Movie Awards, only hours after the her nomination was announced, the first of many to come as a nominee.

Here’s a brief tutorial, straight from the nominee herself, on how to say it:

Back when Bradley Cooper was waiting tables at Washington D.C.'s Georgetown University in the 90's and imagining a West Coast future similar to then it-boy Ben Affleck, he probably didn’t imagine the awkward moments; like spending your 38th birthday with "Entertainment Tonight" personality-emeritus Mary Hart warbling “Happy Birthday” in front of 2,000 people, and then fending off a crowd of iPhone photo-seekers on the posh side of four security check points at a ritzy hotel after-party.

Event specialist Chet Mehta has recently set up his own shop, “P.R. Dept.,” and he hit the ground running: TV Guide’s “Hotlist” party, an exhibition for awards contender “The Dark Knight Rises,” and joining the team for Jessica Simpson’s and Rihanna’s fragrance launches (Rihanna, center, and Mehta, right).

After helping to create buzz for "The Twilight Saga" before the first film and working on "Stand Up to Cancer" during five years at ID-PR and a stint at Sunshine Sachs, Mehta moved quickly. He wrapped at Sunshine Sachs on a Friday and opened his own doors...

Mark Wahlberg and director Baltasar Kormakur (with Kormakur’s wife at the Thompson Hotel this week.) are in deep.

Kormakur and Wahlberg are riding a successful streak of collaborations following “Contraband” with the just-wrapped “2 Guns” and an HBO project “The Missionary” in development.

When Kormakur’s “The Deep” opened in his native Iceland, it took 50% of the weekend’s box office...
