The National Trust, a guardian of U.K. heritage, is examining whether to try to save Abbey Road Studios, where the Beatles recorded most of their albums, after EMI put the building up for sale.
The trust had seen "an astonishing outpouring of public emotion", it said, after the Financial Times reported on Tuesday that EMI had begun courting bidders for the London property that has been used by artists from Elgar to the band Elbow.
"It is not often that the public spontaneously suggests that the National Trust should acquire a famous building," it said. "However, Abbey Road Studios appears to be very dear to the nation's heart, to the extent that we will take soundings as to whether a campaign is desirable or even feasible."
