“Will & Grace” alum will play an NYPD homicide detective balancing work and family life
Debra Messing is back in business with NBC.
Messing, who starred in the network's sitcom “Will & Grace” and, more recently, its short-lived musical series “Smash,” will star in another series for the network. Titled “The Mysteries of Laura,” the show received a series order Thursday from NBC.

In the drama, Messing will play Laura Diamond, a brilliant NYPD homicide detective who balances her “Columbo” day job with a crazy family life that includes two unruly twin boys and a soon-to-be ex-husband — also a cop — who just can't seem to sign the divorce papers.
Between cleaning up after her boys and cleaning up the streets, she'd be the first to admit she has her “hot mess” moments. However, she somehow makes it all work with the help of her sexy and understanding partner, but things becomes even more complicated when her husband ironically becomes her boss at the precinct. For Laura, every day is a high-wire balancing act.
Laz Alonso (“Avatar”) and “True Blood” actress Janina Gavankar are also cast in the series.
“Supernatural” producer McG directed the pilot, and is executive producing, along with writer Jeff Rake (“Boston Legal”), Greg Berlanti, Aaron Kaplan and Todd Lituchy.
The series is being produced by Warner Bros. Television, Berlanti Productions and Kapital Entertainment.
