Lovato's re-commitment to the show comes following news that Britney Spears and record executive L.A. Reid had opted out of the series. Lovato and Spears themselves came aboard to replace judges Paula Abdul and Nicole Scherzinger, who were ousted after the show's maiden season.

Former "American Idol" curmudgeon Simon Cowell, who created "The X Factor" and imported it to America after making it a hit in England, is also returning for the third season.

“I am so excited to return as a judge and mentor on 'The X Factor,'” Lovato, 20, said. “Last season was an unbelievable experience and I really enjoyed developing personal relationships with the contestants and the panel. I look forward to taking my previous experience and applying it to make this season even better!”

In the announcement, Cowell touted Lovato as a "superstar" — albeit a "really, really annoying" one.

“I couldn’t be happier that Demi wants to come back this year,” Cowell noted. “She’s a superstar in her own right and was a fantastic mentor last year. Even though she can be really, really annoying – I truly enjoyed working with her and so did the artists.”
