‘The Departed’ Screenwriter William Monahan Directing ‘Mojave’

The Oscar-winner will direct his original thriller “Mojave”

Oscar-winning screenwriter William Monahan is sliding behind the camera to direct "Mojave," Atlas Entertainment said Friday.

The film is described as original thriller, but the movie's producers gave no hint about a possible plot in a release touting the project.

Monahan is best known for writing the screenplay for "The Departed," the Best Picture winning crime thriller from Martin Scorsese.

Monahan recently completed the screenplay "The Gambler," a remake of the 1974 James Caan classic,  for Martin Scorsese and producer Irwin Winkler at Paramount.

He also wrote the screenplays for the historical drama "Kingdom of Heaven" and the Middle Eastern political thriller "Body of Lies."

Monahan wrote the script and will produce the film alongside Atlas Independent’s William Green. Atlas’ Andy Horwitz and Alan Glazer will executive produce with Henceforth Pictures’ Justine Suzanne Jones.

Production for Mojave will begin August 2012 in Southern California.
