In a new trailer for the indie drama “Diary of a Teenage Girl,” an insecure teenage girl records an audio journal of her sexual awakening — including her affair with her mother’s (Kristen Wiig) boyfriend, who’s played by Alexander Skarsgård in a creepy ‘stache.

Director Marielle Heller‘s first feature, which Sony Pictures Classic acquired at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, will open in limited release on Aug. 7.

The film follows British newcomer Bel Powley as Minnie Goetze, a 15-year-old whose illicit relationship is recorded in commentary and confessions that are refreshingly blunt, though sometimes unsettling.

The coming-of-age drama is set in 1970s San Francisco, a time when the hippie movement was winding down and punk rock was taking shape.

“Diary of a Teenage Girl” is adapted from Phoebe Gloeckner’s autobiographical graphic novel of the same name.
