Disney Releases First Look at ‘Avatar’ Theme Park (Video, Photos)

The attraction is slated to open at Animal Kingdom park in Orlando, Fla. in 2017

Disney released the first look images at its upcoming “Avatar” theme park dubbed “Pandora,” which is slated to open in Orlando, Fla. at the Animal Kingdom park at Walt Disney World Resort in early-2017.

“From the moment ‘Avatar’ was released, people were captivated by the mythical world of Pandora,” Walt Disney Parks and Resorts chairman Tom Staggs wrote on the department's blog.

“When we announced that we'd be working with ['Avatar' director] James Cameron and Lightstorm Entertainment to bring this world to life in our parks, we felt certain that this partnership and combination of talent and imagination would produce an experience unlike any other ever created,” he continued.

The four art concept images, first released at the D23 Expo in Japan on Friday, show the park during the day, night, its planned live performances and a sky-high view from the movie's bird-like flying predators, the Banshees, one of the park's planned rides.

“As these concept renderings show in epic scale, in the world of ‘Avatar’ guests will encounter awe-inspiring floating mountains and wander through a nighttime jungle of bioluminescent plants that are alive with light and sound. Guests will also discover what it feels like to soar into the sky riding a Banshee,” said Staggs.

Yeah right, there's no way it's gonna look like that without a VR helmet on!

Roger Dean should get a royalty for having his original work appropriated.

You are a genius. Liked his art more than the music of Yes.

And just like the movie for the first year Entertainment Media & public opinion will swear it's the best thing ever created by man ( with the help of computers connected to flat panel LED screens that will be the largest created, yet again by man & machines with hydraulics ) Then after two years they will half heartedly stand behind their original claim knowing whole heartedly they don't mean it… ;-)

Wow, this looks pretty neat and I'll probably go there when it's done. I'm also looking forward to the 2nd installment of Avatar – one of the best movies ever. Okay, now I've got to ask, because surely I'm not the only one who noticed it: why would a grown man hang all of those Christmas ornaments on his ear? Someone should care enough about him to tell him that it looks ridiculous.

    • Anthony Moore

yea, i didn't like that look.

Avatar. Blech. If you're a fan please excuse my disgust as we're all allowed our opinions and preferences, but it seems ridiculous to devote all that space to a movie that has yet to stand the test of time compared to the library of classics at Disney's fingertips. It's a shame that all of that innovation couldn't have been devoted to bringing an actual good movie to life on a huge scale, like Neverland or Wonderland, or one of the many Star Wars worlds or even something as divisive but still visually spectacular like Tron. Avatar fans are surely rejoicing, but personally….blech.
