Disneyland is getting a makeover in China

Disney CEO Robert Iger unveiled the first model image of Shanghai Disneyland on Wednesday, complete with a model Magic Castle with model fireworks exploding above it.

“With Shanghai Disneyland, we’re creating a one-of-a-kind destination that is authentically Disney and distinctly Chinese,” Iger said at the annual shareholders meeting. “We believe this will be one of the most spectacular Disney experiences yet – and an important part of our future."

The construction for the $3.5 billion dollar theme park was approved by the Chinese government in 2009 and is expected to be completed by the end of 2015, when Disney's newest resort is expected to begin entertaining millions of tourists.

The image above shows just a portion of the all-encompassing Shanghai Disney Resort, which includes the park, two themed hotels, a 495,000-square-foot retail, dining and entertainment venue, recreational facilities and a lake.

“We are incredibly excited about the developments and progress of the Disney resort in Shanghai, one of the world’s most vibrant cities,” said Tom Staggs, chairman of Walt Disney Parks and Resorts.  “Shanghai Disney Resort will bring a classic Disney Parks experience to mainland China and will immerse Chinese guests in a whole new world of creativity, imagination and adventure that only Disney can deliver.”

Shanghai Disneyland will become the Walt Disney Company's sixth resort, joining the original Disneyland in Southern California, Walt Disney World in Florida, Tokyo Disney Resort, Disneyland Paris and Hong Kong Disneyland Resort.
