Disney World to Add Animation Resort

Will feature family suites designed around the characters and themes of “Lion King,” “Nemo,” “Cars” and “Mermaid”

Disney World is getting another major theme destination: Disney’s Art of Animation Resort, the Walt Disney Co. announced on Wednesday.

The Florida resort will feature quality family suites designed around the characters and themes of "The Lion King," "Finding Nemo," "Cars" and "The Little Mermaid."

Tom Staggs, chairman of Disney’s Parks and Resorts said the project “underscores our optimism about the future, as we continue to invest in new experiences for our guests.”

On Tuesday, Disney reported a 55 percent spike in quarterly earnings, due mostly to the box office success of "Alice in Wonderland."

Located adjacent to Disney’s Pop Century Resort, the new resort — the 26th at Disney World — will include 1,120 family suites in "The Lion King," "Cars" and "Finding Nemo" wings, and 864 themed rooms in "The Little Mermaid" wings. Disney World already boasts more than 26,000 guest rooms.

Disney said the resort will also create more than 800 construction jobs in Central Florida.

Disney plans to open the resort by the end of 2012.
