FX’s newest auteur, a Panther and a swimmer-turned-dancer got viewers talking passionately on social media over the past week.
The Wrap has partnered with Canvs, a language-analytics company that measures emotions around content, for a weekly look at the characters and stars that have TV viewers most worked up. The data below covers Sept. 5-12 and is drawn from the most emotionally reacted-to broadcast and cable television shows.
Of the 45,101 specific Emotional Reactions (ERs) surrounding the first episode of FX’s “Atlanta,” 22 percent were prompted by the show’s creator and star Donald Glover — with 38 percent of all his ERs expressing love.
He plays Earnest “Earn” Marks, a manager in Atlanta’s rap music scene, but viewers seem so aware that this show is his baby that they were more inclined to name-check Glover rather than the character he plays.
Of the 216,099 ERs surrounding Thursday’s Carolina Panthers vs. Denver Broncos game on NBC, 8 percent were prompted by Cam Newton. He’s definitely got his vocal fans and detractors on social media, but the real buzz about Newton had to do with how some of the Broncos seemed to feel about him that night. (As NFL.com reports today, “The Carolina Panthers thought the Denver Broncos deserved more penalties for their hits on Cam Newton in last Thursday’s 21-20 season-opening loss. While it’s too late now for the Panthers to get those flags, they might find solace knowing some fines were handed down for the Broncos’ hits.”)
Of the 54,705 ERs surrounding the season premiere of “Dancing With the Stars,” 10 percent were prompted by, yes, Ryan Lochte, who was the unwelcome focus of protesters who stormed the stage (unwelcome, that is, if you’re Ryan Lochte).
If the “DWTS” producers were hoping that Lochte’s presence on the show would be a lightning rod, well, they got their wish, didn’t they?
