Doug Liman is attached to direct Chockstone Pictures' big-screen adaptation of Monte Reel's non-fiction book "The Last of the Tribe: The Epic Quest to Save a Lone Man in the Amazon," reports Variety.
Reel is the South American correspondent for the Washington Post whose book chronicles the search for the last surviving member of an Amazon tribe from the perspective of the government agents charged with both verifying his existence and preserving his way of life.
It doesn't sound like inherently Doug Liman material to me, but it's always nice to see a filmmaker taking chances and lending his clout to a non-3D/CGI-filled tentpole based on a comic book.
Screenwriter Mark Bailey will adapt the book, which Scribner published last month. Bailey will also serve as exec producer on the project. Chockstone's husband-and-wife team Steve and Paula Mae Schwartz will produce with Ed Saxon, Dave Bartis and Liman.
Last year, Chockstone brought Cormac McCarthy's post-apocalyptic novel "The Road" to theaters with Viggo Mortensen in the lead role. The company also provided seed money for Terrence Malick's upcoming "Tree of Life," starring Brad Pitt and Sean Penn.
Liman's Cannes entry "Fair Game" will be released later this year starring Naomi Watts and Penn as outed CIA agent Valerie Plame and her diplomat husband Joseph Wilson.
Liman is represented by CAA, while Gersh represents Bailey and Reel, who is also represented by Larry Weissman for publishing.
