‘Duck Dynasty’ Reversal: What A&E Said Last Week – and Today

'Duck Dynasty' Reversal: What A&E Said Last Week – and Today

How A&E justifies its decision to back down

How did A&E justify its decision to flip-flop on the “Duck Dynasty” flap?

A week ago, when it suspended Phil Robertson because of his views on homosexuality, it said they “in no way reflect those of A+E Network.”

Also read: ‘Duck Dynasty': A&E Reverses Suspension; Phil Robertson Won't Miss Any Episodes

By Friday, its views of his views had apparently changed. After more than 250,000 people signed a petition calling for Robertson's return, A&E announced it had lifted the suspension, without Robertson missing a single episode. The network now said the show shares a message of “unity, tolerance and forgiveness.”

Here's how A&E went from calling the statements disappointing last Wednesday to praising “Duck Dynasty” for its inclusive message nine days later.

Last week:

“We are extremely disappointed to have read Phil Robertson's comments in GQ, which are based on his own personal beliefs and are not reflected in the series ‘Duck Dynasty.’ His personal views in no way reflect those of A+E Networks, who have always been strong supporters and champions of the LGBT community. The network has placed Phil under hiatus from filming indefinitely.”

“As a global media content company, A+E Networks’ core values are centered around creativity, inclusion and mutual respect. We believe it is a privilege for our brands to be invited into people's home and we operate with a strong sense of integrity and deep commitment to these principals.

That is why we reacted so quickly and strongly to a recent interview with Phil Robertson.  While Phil's comments made in the interview reflect his personal views based on his own beliefs, and his own personal journey, he and his family have publicly stated they regret the “coarse language” he used and the mis-interpretation of his core beliefs based only on the article.  He also made it clear he would ‘never incite or encourage hate.’  We at A+E Networks expressed our disappointment with his statements in the article, and reiterate that they are not views we hold.

But Duck Dynasty is not a show about one man's views. It resonates with a large audience because it is a show about family… a family that America has come to love. As you might have seen in many episodes, they come together to reflect and pray for unity, tolerance and forgiveness.  These are three values that we at A+E Networks also feel strongly about.

So after discussions with the Robertson family, as well as consulting with numerous advocacy groups, A&E has decided to resume filming “Duck Dynasty” later this spring with the entire Robertson family.

We will also use this moment to launch a national public service campaign (PSA) promoting unity, tolerance and acceptance among all people, a message that supports our core values as a company, and the values found in Duck Dynasty. These PSAs will air across our entire portfolio.”

Hey A&E, why don't you just be honest and say you can't afford to lose this show. ‘Unity, tolerance, and acceptance?’ What he said was ‘dividing, intolerable and unacceptable.’

  • Educator

First, lets start with some education, yes, homosexuality has been around as long as mankind, and is not going anywhere, no one chooses to be gay or lesbian, they are born that way! There is a large spectrum between heterosexual and homosexual that we are born into! And for those comments below: a woman's anus and a man's anus are biologically identical so is a mouth, women have an amazing vagina as well, a plus for those who enjoy it! Stop trying such weak comparisons. We are born as all humans. The same as being born Caucasian, African-American, Mexican, Chinese, Japanese and yes there is a difference!, or any other nationality. We are all born one race, human… and should be treated as such, we all bleed the same, we all have the same emotions and then there are environmental conditions that effect everyone as they grow up. Some live happy lives with loving parents, some horrible abusive lives including sexual abuse which runs rampant here in our society effecting all our children and all past has a bearing on that person's future. Many religious books, written by mans perception has many controversial passages that contradict and was not meant to be taken literally and out of context. God offers love and forgiveness to all. We should be trying to educate society to the behaviors that effect our precious children and help and respect adults by offering help to educate not ridicule.

    • Dr Dave

Educator, you are the product of brainwashing and lies. People are born into a sinful world with a sin nature. No one is born “gay”! The word gay has been hijacked by todays sodomites. Homosexuality is SIN. People are not born homosexuals. They choose to live in that particular sin just like a thief or a murderer chooses to live in their particular sin. If you have a problem with anything written here, take it up with The LORD on Judgement Day. This is not just a man's opinion. God's Word clearly declares homosexuality and many other acts/actions wrong – Romans Chapter 1 and Sodom and Gomorrah in the old testament. You'll probably just make some insane comments against The Bible or break your own spiritual neck trying to twist God's words into “judge not” like a lot of illiterate “Bible Scholars” do. But hey, you'll have to take that up with your maker too. I'm not going to pamper the queers by pretending their deviant behavior is okay. If you live that type of life, get right with God. He'll forgive you if you repent and trust Christ for Salvation – Romans 3:23, Romans 6:23, Romans 5:8, Acts 20:21, Romans 10:13, Ephesians 2:8-9, John 3:16 etc. We are all sinners, just admit it and get it right. God wants everyone to get right and go to heaven – 2 Peter 3:9 KJV

      • thinkthankthunk

” If you have a problem with anything written here, take it up with The LORD on Judgement Day”.
What a crappy cop-out for your terrible world-view. How can I take it up your particular brand of Mythology. If you don't like what I've written here, take it up with the Flying Spaghetti Monster.

      • Phillip Wade

I totally agree! I do not think that anyone is Born gay! They just want to live that lifestyle, which I will never understand! But that aside, if you do not like the Robertson's show, just move your lazy finger to the remote control and change the channel. But then, all you will be able to watch is shows promoting homosexuality!!!

        • RB

Phillip, Duck Dynasty is a fake, do you seriously think this is a real show about real people? They are preppy rich people that decided to make fun of the southern culture…and get paid to do it…LOL

      • RB

Dr Dave, How can you say that people are not born gay? Do you know this first hand? NO you don't!! That I am absolutely certain of! All are made in god's image including homosexuals, autism, downs syndrome. These people have a genetic disorder, it cannot be cured. Its not an addiction! The bible says many things, but I hope for your sake and others like you that this is not a test of your compassion for the fellow man, handed down by god…That you will have to take up with your maker also!!!!!!!!

        • kerryyarbrough

RB, Dr Dave is right. No one is born “gay”! That is a lie that people who wish to push the homosexual agenda are trying to get people to believe. I am not gullible enough to believe that lie because I have too much education and common sense to fall for it. God would not create anybody a certain way which He forbids. God in His written word – the Bible (Old and New Testaments) forbids homosexuality. God created man and gave man the freedom to choose. God did not create
homosexuality. Why is it that the homosexual suggests God created them as a way
to justify their sin? If this were true the pedophile, murderer or thief will be
saying I am the way I am because God created me this way. God cannot create
something that is contrary to his very being. God cannot create that which He
has declared unholy, sinful. For the homosexual, murderer, thief or the
pedophile to say they were born that way, I would agree in that all men are born
          sinners 6 and homosexuality
like murder or stealing 7 is
but one expression of that sinful nature. Homosexual behavior is forbidden by God (see lev. and rom. and 1 cor.)

          • RB

How would you know that someone is not born gay? Did god actually tell you that he did not create homosexuals? Does it say anywhere in a bible that god would not do that? NO!! Maybe his lesson is for you to learn compassion…Better think about that

      • Lauretta Payne

We are so *lucky* to have people like you teaching us about buology, interpreting the Bible for us, and speaking for God -so we won't have to trouble ourselves with these issues. Thank God He gave me a very good brain and the ability to think for myself.

  • diane lapointe

hey why is it that the gays and lesbians want everyone to support their cause { to be who they are]when others believe that they are hurting themselves with their life styles? we just want to save them from being eat up with deseases that they cause them selves to be afflicted. with on account of their life styles, they are loved by Christians thur out this world.

  • hupto

Does this mean we can finally put this nonsense to bed and go back to important stories like how Santa is really white and Al Gore is fat?

  • JamesAt17

All the talk is about sodomy. (oral sex) Would Phil be man enough to tell the entire world if he has ever received oral sex from his spouse or preformed it upon his mate? Just because it is now called homosexuality does not distract from its first description in the bible called sodomy.

    • EnglishTeacher

      You badly need a dictionary.

      • thinkthankthunk

        No, you do.

        • Dave Landry

Any of various forms of sexual intercourse held to be unnatural or abnormal, especially anal intercourse or bestiality.

        • EnglishTeacher

          I have one, troll.
OR is a rather important word in that definition. An importance that the OP, to whom I was replying, did not begin to address. Also, in no dictionary anywhere are the words sodomy and homosexuality interchangeable.

Another supporting role to the Robertson's would be “Dog The Bounty Hunter” show and cast too, as they too say a prayer to Jesus as lord and savior at the end of each hunt for runners from justice. Seems they too have a very successful show and following.

  • The Critic

Relax folks – it is all going to come down to sponsors. How many sponsors can afford to loose the support of gays, blacks and any other minorities and even white's who won't sell themselves for money like A&E has done? Let's see who has more power..

  • Hello

where does this leave the Bible? If Phil was quoting from it, and what he is quoting is bigoted, why is the author of the Bible getting off free of blame? He, She, them should be held accountable as well.

    • Sincerely speaking

Good luck finding the actual author! It's been around for centuries and ppl often take scripture out of context! We are all entitled to our views and all of us are entitled to voice them out. Regardless famous ppl shouldn't get boycotted just because they have different views, it just means they are HUMAN!!

From the article: “We will also use this moment to launch a national public service
campaign (PSA) promoting unity, tolerance and acceptance among all

Oh, uhhh, so A&E will continue to give succor to all nasty little gangs who insist on heaping their odd, or evil, or perverted “principles” on the rest of us – or else.

Should've added a final sentence, to wit: “The poobahs at A&E are gutless purveyors of not-for-prime-time swill during prime time, which is why Fifth-column TV sit”coms” make it appear that half of America is either, homosexual, egregiously promicuour, or incredibly stupid.”

    • p0rkch0pian

Uhhh, sorry; the word is “promiscuous.”

  • john webster

he didn't say all blacks. he said only the ones he knowed .ive heard this all my life. It could be true. I hope in some cases it was. as far as gays. if its ok in this world to be gay and say that's fine. but don't expect everyone to be ok with it. we are all sinners and we all sin.and we like to point fingers that makes us human.but we should be able to voice a opinon without being punished for our beliefs thank you

  • Mason Packham

Why don't you quit crying. If you've ever watched media, you know that you're never going to hear the actual quotes of what he said. I've lived in the north and the south. Bigotry is everywhere. If you don't like what he supposedly said, then don't watch the show. He was talking about religion. The exact quote from the Bible: “It is an abomination for any man to lieth with a man in the way that he would lieth with a woman.” My interpretation: It's Adam and Eve, not Adam and Steve.” It's ridiculous for anyone who is offended by his “statements” to sit and whine. Get over it. Freedom of speech. It's an amendment in your constitution. You also have the right not to watch the show. No one is forcing you too. Moral of the story….quit being a butt hurt little child. If you're gay….great. If you're black….great. If you think Phil Robertson doesn't like you….great. There are over 300 million people in the U.S.A. Find someone that likes you, and keep away from those who don't. If everyone could just accept that, we'd be better off.

  • Mike Conner

People will watch anything , I think they watch this show just to say “Thank God i'm not stupids as those red necks , Kinda sad Christians want to jump op and say those rednecks are just like us

    • gladeo

put a shirt on, no one wants to see that shit.

  • jwhmusic

This is truly a sad day in America. We have lost an opportunity to stand united in the cause of tolerance and inclusion and have yielded to the religious zealots and their message of bigotry and racism. It is clear the only motivation in this country is money, and A&E is out to protect it's multi-million dollar enterprise centered around the Duck clan. I am sure those who supported the show see this as a victory, but they are truly mistaken – this decision is not based on morality, but greed. America has verily lost its way in the wilderness – it's time to take off the camouflage and come into the light of reason before it is too late.

    • ardee

Come to the light of reason ? COME TO THE LIGHT OF REASON ? It seems there is no one more unwilling to come to the light of reason,[and intolerant thereof] than the LGBT community. Even setting all other arguments aside and looking at it with simple logic, homosexuality does not make sense. But the LGBT community, aided by today's morally degenerate liberal society, media, and politically correct crowd willfully defies honest reason and truth.Political correctness has one major flaw. It is dishonest, and therefore incorrect. It is an attempt by liberal politicians to administer grace to people while at the same time throwing truth in the trash. Why? Because as we all know, the truth hurts, and they fear it won't gain them political ground. The truth can be very painful and cut us deep.Scripture tells us that grace and truth came by Jesus Christ ; both grace and truth, We all desperately need them both.

But the purpose of grace is not to nullify truth;NO NO NO ! The purpose of grace is to help us,strengthen us heal us,and give us understanding and mature us to the place where we can come to grips with and accept truth and be transformed and set free by it from the sin and corruption of this world that we are all born into. Jesus gave his life for us to that end. He thought it was the reasonable thing to do, and I praise him for it.Christians do not wish to hate anyone, The LGBT community aided by liberals is co-ercively pushing and demanding [in a rather childish way] that we condone and accept and legitimize what our conscience and scriptural truth tells us is wrong, and please understand that we can not do that. My prayer for the LGBT community is that they receive both grace and truth from Christ, and are transformed and rescued by it.

  • Moneyman

A&E core value = Profits, Profits, Profits. Say and do whatever is necessary to keep the margin in the black.

  • Jan

I can't for the life of me figure out why people think he said that racism did not exist. He said that where he was from, EVERYONE was poor….he even used the term “white trash” ….. In his background, everyone was in the same boat. They were all poor…and they ALL worked together. That was/is not an anomaly. Racism has become far worse in the last 5 years because we have a prez and a willing press who thrive on division, and what more obvious trait can they pick on than skin color? And Phil did not say or insinuate that he has hatred for or fear of people who chose to define themselves by their sexual habits…he just stated that according to strict interpretation of Scripture, God did not design it that way, and God also condemned it. Neither could he (Phil) understand such an attraction. He defined himself also by the same strict interpretation as a former sinner who has accepted the grace and salvation of God. He freely admitted to a less than ideal prior lifestyle – in the past and buried. (His wife also refers to those “hard times” and she is not referring to financial matters.) The A&E people (and others) do not have a decent grasp on the English language and modern usage if they interpret Phil's comments otherwise, or if they choose to define the modern term “gay” in a manner other than Phil's “coarsely” worded reference. Read what the man said, not what someone else said he did.

“Let the women learn in silence with
all subjection. But I suffer not a woman to teach, nor to usurp authority over
the man, but to be in silence. For Adam was first formed, then Eve. And Adam was
not deceived, but the woman being deceived was in the
      transgression.” (I
      Timothy 2:11-14)
God's word says you shouldn't have an oppionion on this. So just let the men talk, OK sweetie.

Just as the rollout of obamacare has set back liberal progressive causes for years, president Obama has set back African Americans in politics for years to come ala David Dinkens

    • Dave Landry

I've been saying that for 5 years now…..all Obama did was ruin it for a good black presidential candidate.

  • Jim

I wish that A&E had shown more integrity and stated they over reacted. Robertson is entitled to his opinion and it showed more respect, more tolerance than GLAAD did. I have no problem with GLAAD ‘rebuttal’ or making comments but they need to give what they ask for: respect and tolerance. Some gay guy responded to this suggestion by stating: “We'll give respect and tolerance when we get it.” Sorry, dude, I suspect that won't go well for gays. When gays draw a line in the sand, most straight people know what side they belong on. Tolerance will get your more than a brash attitude.

  • rmm1974

A & E what's your problem??? This idiot said to men marry a 15 year old. This man is sick. WAKE UP.

    • thinkthankthunk

It's OK, there is plenty of rape, incest, polygamy, slavory etc. in the Bible. Phil can say whatever insane thing he wants. “God's Word” totally backs him up. That's the great thing about God's word, you can use it to justify ANY unjustifyable position. I sure hope no woman has an oppinion on this – God says to shut up and do what your man tells you. (See how easy that is.)

      • realist

Come on people. He did not say for a 50 year old man to marry a teenager. He married his wife at a young age. We all know they are very happy now. Not always but now. Please stop reading everything word for word as the media tells it. We all know the media spins it to get you to read.

A&E got their heads out of their asses and realized how much money they were going to lose. According to news reports CMT had already started negotiations with the Robertson Family for “Duck Dynasty”. I wonder if that (I hate to say it) Woman CEO s still with A&E? I don't trust their sincerity about bringing the show back with the entire family. I think it is all about money. They don't want to lose the show that broke records for viewers.

  • dave in Vt.

just reading these blogs shows what effect a demented scuzzball [robertson] has on people. yesturdays robertson-sermon was on pedaphillia…[his advise...marry girls when they are 14 or 15 years old] all you Robinson fans sure picked a winner here to idolize. hell….invite him over for dinner and to meet your child-daughtor. i expect Robinson will soon form a cult-religion and reveal to you loyal followers….that he is the reincarnation of Christ.

This is a great show. Besides people “preach” freedom of speech, well where is it? You people around the world are too sensitive. In today's world eveybody is offended for any reason… for words, music, dresscode and etc. and take it way to far….People should be able to wear, speak and do what they
