E3 2016: ‘The Last Guardian’ Finally Gets Release Date for Playstation 4

After a decade of rumors and development delays, ‘The Last Guardian’ will debut on Playstation 4 this fall

“The Last Guardian,” the highly anticipated spiritual successor to “Shadow of the Colossus,” will be released on the Playstation 4 on October 25, Sony announced Monday at E3 in Los Angeles.

The game, which has been in development since 2007, tells the story of a boy who has been imprisoned in some mysterious ruins and must find his way out with the help of a giant dog-like griffin named Trico.

The game will combine platform and action segments with puzzles that will require Trico’s help to solve, though the beast will not always respond to the player’s commands.

“The Last Guardian” was originally developed by Team ICO, the team that created the critically-acclaimed “Shadow of the Colossus.”

Due to multiple delays, including the temporary departure of the game’s director, Fumito Ueda, plans to release the game on the Playstation 3 were scrapped.

The final product has been made by Sony’s in-house Japanese studio in collaboration with genDESIGN, a team consisting of Ueda and former Team ICO members.
