Man Dies at Electric Daisy Carnival in Las Vegas (Updated)

Authorities cautioned festivalgoers that drug use combined with high temperatures in area could be fatal

A man died Saturday at the Electric Daisy Carnival in Las Vegas, an annual electronic dance music festival.

The 24-year-old attendee was pronounced dead just before 4 a.m., but the cause of death has yet to be determined. The Clark County Coroner’s Office has identified the man as James Cody Matthews.

“We extend our deepest condolences to the family and friends of the man who passed away,”Insomniac productions, the company that produces the festival, said in a statement. “The health and safety of our fans is Insomniac’s first priority and we take every measure to create a safe environment.”

“While the cause of this tragedy will take some time to determine, we ask that you keep his loved ones in your thoughts and prayers,” the statement continued.

Over 400 medical calls were made from the festival on the day in question, with seven people requiring treatment at local hospitals, Las Vegas Review-Journal reports.

There were 26 drug-related arrests, as well. Authorities had cautioned attendees prior to the start of the festival that drug use combined with high temperatures could be potentially fatal. Temperatures in the area reached over 100 degrees on Saturday.

It is estimated that 135,000 people attended the festival on Saturday.
