‘The Ellen DeGeneres Show’ Is Heading to China

Episodes will run in China within 48 hours of initial U.S. broadcast

Ellen DeGeneres, meet the television-loving public of China.

“The Ellen DeGeneres Show” has entered a licensing agreement to become the first U.S. daily talk show to be carried in China, via that country’s leading online video service provider, Sohu Video.

Episodes of the talk show will air in China within 48 hours of their original U.S. broadcasts, with subtitles, according to a release issued by Warner Bros. Television Group on Tuesday.

Sohu chairman and CEO Charles Zhang said that he hopes the show will have “strong appeal and relevance with the Chinese audience.”

“Sohu offers Chinese Internet users a diversified portfolio of top-quality content, with a wide coverage of hot TV dramas, animation and now U.S. talk shows,” Zhang said. “‘The Ellen DeGeneres Show’ is one of the most well-known talk shows in the U.S., and we believe it could also have strong appeal and relevance with the Chinese audience.”

Warner Bros. International Television Distribution is distributing the show in China.

Warner Bros. Worldwide Television Distribution president Jeffrey R. Schlesinger hailed the series’ avoidance of conflict as one of its keys to success.

“Ellen has clearly differentiated herself and her talk show from so many of the controversial conflict-oriented talk shows as it has become an increasingly positive alternative in daytime featuring the biggest stars from worlds of film, television and music,” said Schlesinger. “She has an unmatched and unique brand of family-friendly humor and love of pop culture that appeal to audiences of all ages in a very fun one-hour of programming. We are thrilled that ‘Ellen’ will now be seen in China and is the first U.S. talk show available there.”
