Vivica A. Fox will join “Empire’s” upcoming second season as Cookie Lyon’s sister, an individual with knowledge of the casting told TheWrap.

Fox will play Cookie’s oldest sibling, who comes to town seeking help from her younger sister for unknown reasons. She joins an already impressive list of guest stars for Season 2, which includes Chris Rock, Ludacris, Mariah Carey, Marisa Tomei and Clarence Williams III.

Series co-creator Lee Daniels previously said that he would be interested in doing a spinoff series that would focus on a young Cookie and her family.

“Let’s go back and understand her mother. Let’s go back and understand her sisters,” Daniels said. “Let’s get back and understand the makings of her. That I know, because I know Cookie … It would be like a prequel.”

Vivica A. Fox is a film and television veteran, appearing in such hit projects as “Kill Bill Vol. 1,” “Independence Day,” and “Curb Your Enthusiasm.” She will also reprise her role from “Independence Day” in the upcoming sequel “Independence Day: Resurgence.”

“Empire” returns to Fox on Sept. 23 at 9 p.m.
