For those with a limited knowledge of the cable universe, trying to locate the premium network Epix on their dial may be akin to boldly going on a five-year mission where no man has gone before.
But the premium service, a joint venture between Paramount Pictures, MGM and Lionsgate that launched in 2009, is the exclusive home of "The Captains," a new "Star Trek" documentary written and directed by none other than William Shatner.

As we posted in our recap of Shatner's Friday appearance at Comic-Con, the Epix original film finds the former Captain Kirk tracking down the actors who starred in the four "Star Trek" television spinoffs: Patrick Stewart ("The Next Generation"), Avery Brooks ("Deep Space Nine"), Kate Mulgrew ("Voyager") and Scott Bakula ("Enterprise"). He also talks with Chris Pine, who played a younger Kirk in J.J. Abrams' 2009 reboot on the "Star Trek" movie series.
Below, we've posted the trailer for Shatner's documentary, which airs Friday at 8 p.m. ET but which is also available for viewing on EPIX's website via a free 14-day trial subscription.
Possibly more compelling than the film itself, however, is the network's accompanying "Shatnerpalooza," a ten-day celebration of the original Captain Kirk's work in "Star Trek" and elsewhere.
The event also includes the Long Khan, an interactive video that asks viewers to submit themselves yelling "Khaaaaaan!" a la Shatner in the gooey 1982 gem "The Wrath of Khan," which became an Internet meme a few years back.
