Ethan Hawke Watches Son Grow Up in First Trailer for Richard Linklater’s ‘Boyhood’ (Video)

The Sundance hit, which took 12 years to film, follows young actor Ellar Coltrane as he grows up on-screen

Richard Linklater‘s new film, the much-talked about “Boyhood,” released its first trailer Thursday.

The Sundance hit, distributed by IFC, follows the adolescence of Mason (newcomer Ellar Coltrane) from ages 6 to 18, as we drop in on key moments in his life.

Frequent Linklater collaborator Ethan Hawke (“Before Midnight”) plays Mason’s father, Mason Sr., while Patricia Arquette plays the boy’s mother, Olivia.

What makes “Boyhood” so unique is that the director chose to film it over a 12-year span, with all the actors virtually aging in “real time” on-screen as the film chronicles the family.

Critics and audiences seemed very receptive of Linklater’s fresh approach at Sundance, as most films traditionally would have “aged-up” Coltrane by replacing him with a more age-appropriate actor as the story progressed.

“Boyhood” opens in limited release July 11. Watch the trailer above.
