Facebook users were unable to post about their puppies or share videos of their toddlers Monday, following an outage on the site that came on the same day a Gmail outage kept users from their inboxes. Service was restored within an hour.
Facebook servers crashed at about 2:40 p.m. PT after the social network reconfigured some of its domain-name service, the part of the site that allows computers around the world to log on.
"Earlier today we made a change to our DNS infrastructure and that change resulted in some people being temporarily unable to reach the site," the company said in a statement. "We detected and resolved the issue quickly, and we are now back to 100 percent. We apologize for any inconvenience."

The outage occurred hours after Google's near-ubiquitous email service went down Monday morning, preventing users from logging on and sending emails. Its accompanying instant-messaging service and Chrome, Google's browser, also crashed.
