‘Fifty Shades of Grey’ Hitting Theaters in August 2014

Adaptation of hit novel will face off against "Guardians of the Galaxy"

Break out the chains and whips, America.

"Fifty Shades of Grey" will open domestically on Aug. 1, 2014. It will face some heavy competition in the form of Marvel's "Guardians of the Galaxy," an adaptation of the popular comic-book series of the same name.

The worldwide rollout for the big screen adaptation of E L James’ best-elling sadomasochistic romance will be announced later, Focus Features said.

Sam Taylor-Johnson ("Nowhere Boy") is directing the film adaptation from a screenplay by Kelly Marcel ("Saving Mr. Banks"). Michael De Luca and Dana Brunetti are producing the movie version along with James.

Universal Pictures and Focus Features acquired the rights to the “Fifty Shades of Grey” trilogy in March 2012. Focus Features will market and distribute the first film in partnership with Universal.

The film follows the sexually combustible relationship between a billionaire and a college student.
