Fox Appeals 'R' Rating on Sexy 'The Other Woman'

The studio wants a PG-13 for the revenge comedy starring Cameron Diaz, Leslie Mann and Kate Upton

Fox is appealing the R-rating that the Motion Picture Association of America gave its upcoming comedy “The Other Woman.”

Cameron Diaz, Kate Upton, Leslie Mann, Nicki Minaj and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau from TV's “Game of Thrones” star in the film, which is set for an April 25 opening domestically. Nick Cassavetes (“My Sister's Keeper”) directs. The script from Melissa Stack focuses on three wronged women out for revenge on a three-timing spouse.

The comedy drew the “R” because of sexual references, but there's little doubt the studio will make the changes necessary to get a PG-13. That's because limiting the film's audience to those 17 or over — unless there's an accompanying adult — would significantly limit its box office potential.

There have been 10 PG-rated movies released this year and they've taken in an average of $41.7 million (thank you, “The Lego Movie”), while 28 PG-13 rated films have earned an average of $25.4 million. There have been 32 R-rated movies released so far, and they've averaged just $7.8 million, according to Box Office Mojo.

It is the hook and the loglines why these R movies don't sale. Wolf of Wall Street did just fine. There is nothing wrong with rating it is the plot that sales. I think while I love Kate Upton, Cameron Diaz has box office name. The idea sounds really cliche. It may flop either way. Melissa Stack really concerns me look at her imbd credits, so you have no clue what your getting. Studios think R is the death penalty no it is the people attached. Look at Philomena it did not improve in sales a lot. Anyhow just some thoughts.
