Batman Prequel Series 'Gotham' Casts Young Riddler

Newcomer Cory Michael Smith will play the future villain on the Fox series

Fox and Warner Bros. Television has found its young Riddler.

Newcomer Cory Michael Smith has joined as Edward Nygma, aka the future villain Riddler.

Edward is a brilliant young forensic scientist. He's described as inquisitive, eccentric and outgoing but socially awkward. He wants to be liked, but doesn't quite know how to make friends.

Smith appeared in the Todd Haynes film “Carol,” the feature film “Camp X-Ray” and the HBO miniseries “Olive Kitteridge.”

He joins the series that focuses on young Det. Gordon (Ben McKenzie) and the villains that would later terrorize the city of Gotham of the famed Batman franchise.

The series also stars Donal Logue, Jada Pinkett Smith, Zabryna Guevara, Sean Pertwee, Robin Lord Taylor, Erin Richards, David Mazouz and Camren Bicondova.

Bruno Heller (“The Mentalist”) wrote the pilot script and will serve as executive producer. Danny Cannon (“CSI”) will direct and executive produce the pilot.

Paradigm and Circle of Confusion represent Smith.

    Okay. So, I was under the impression that all Batman's enemies were basically his contemporaries (age-wise, I mean). Not that it really matters, I guess, but this just feels like a way to string TV viewers along without giving them a real Batman show with a fully grown, fully costumed Batman in it.
