Fox News’ Bob Beckel Apologizes for Rape Comment (Video)

"When was the last time you heard about a rape on campus?"

Bob Beckel, the liberal co-host of Fox News' "The Five," apologized for questioning how often women are raped on college campuses.

"When was the last time you heard about a rape on campus?" Beckel asked on Tuesday's episode during a debate about whether women on campuses should carry guns to defend themselves.

Beckel was told college rapes are "rampant" — especially date rapes.

"Well, date rape, yeah, that's one thing. But are you going to take a gun out and shoot your date?" he asked.

On Wednesday, Beckel clarified his position.

"It's a horrible, horrendous issue," he said. "Simply put, rape is rape–whether it's date rape or it's somebody coming in off the campus trying to rape somebody else. I very strongly feel that way. So, I just want to straighten the record out on that."

It was only the latest apology from Beckel, who twice used the F-word on the air during "The Five" debates. The analyst is one of the few liberals on a network dominated by conservative commentators.

A recent Department of Justice report found that rape is "the most common violent crime on American college campuses today," pointing to estimates that almost 25 percent of college women have been victims of rape or attempted rape since the age of 14. It also found that women ages 16 to 24 "experience rape at rates four times higher than the assault rate of all women."
