‘Fuller House’ Star John Stamos Talks DUI Arrest, Rehab Stint: ‘I’ve Had a Rough Year With My Mom Dying’

“You either continue on that path–and some of it’s fun, but a lot of it’s not–or there’s this other thing, this golden opportunity sitting there with all this work,” the actor says

John Stamos is finally addressing his DUI and subsequent stint in rehab.

In a new interview with Details magazine, the “Fuller House” star explains that the drunk driving incident was a “turning point” following the death of his mother last September.

“You know, I’ve had a rough year with my mom dying, so it all came to a head, and it was a turning point,” Stamos said. “You either continue on that path–and some of it’s fun, but a lot of it’s not–or there’s this other thing, this golden opportunity sitting there with all this work and all this goodwill that you have going for you. That’s the key.”

Stamos was stopped by Beverly Hills police for erratic driving in June . Immediately cuffed and handed over to paramedics, he was arrested at the hospital after doctors confirmed his intoxication. The actor checked into rehab several weeks later.

In the interview, Stamos also talked about having to accept the fact that he’ll always be known for his role as Uncle Jesse on “Full House.” The actor has pulled double duty with shooting revival “Fuller House” and Fox’s new season sitcom “Grandfathered,” which he co-stars with Josh Peck of Nickelodeon fame.

“I’d come off stage, and people would still ask me about Full House,” said of his Broadway role in “The Best Man.” “But I knew in my heart that I’d just been on stage with James Earl Jones for three hours, so they could twin-talk me all they wanted.”
