FX Acquires TV Rights to ‘Salt’

Cable channel will debut Angelina Jolie spy thriller in 2012; also picks up Fox’s “Predators”

“Salt” has become FX’s latest movie acquisition, with Sony Pictures’ Angelina Jolie spy thriller set to debut on the cable channel in late 2012, the network confirmed.

The deal follows a standard feature-to-cable-TV transaction model, with the News Corp.-owned channel licensing the film based on about 10-12 percent of its domestic box-office receipts.

Produced at a cost of around $100 million, “Salt” is predicted to open to more than $30 million at theaters in the U.S. and Canada this weekend, while challenging Warner’s “Inception” or the top spot at the domestic box office.

With FX also acquiring the recently released, Robert Rodriguez-produced sci-fi thriller “Predators” in an inhouse transaction from Fox, the cable channel remains on an aggressive movie-licensing spree.

Earlier this summer, the network picked up Adam Sandler comedy “Grown Ups” and Jackie Chan remake “The Karate Kid” from Sony. FX also licensed ’80s TV remake “The A-Team” and Tom Cruise film “Night and Day” from Fox.
