Gala Opening for ‘King Kong’ 3D Ride

Universal Studios and Peter Jackson give press and celebs a sneak peek at their big ape ride

"King Kong" has long been a staple at Universal Studios. At least until a 2008 fire cut through the studio's Hollywood backlot and left the long-running ride completely destroyed.

But a new ride has risen from the ashes. The big, angry beast has been given a second life and befitting the current fad in movies, a 3D makeover, thanks in part to filmmaker Peter Jackson, who directed the 2005 remake of the classic ape film.

Universal Studio's 3D "King Kong" ride had its red carpet premiere Tuesday. The three-minute ride, which has been heavily touted by the theme park, is the creation Jackson and his Weta digital effects studio.

The gala opening drew over 500 press and visitors and attracted a series of television and film stars including Christopher Lloyd, "Weeds'" Hunter Parrish, Craig Robinson and Wayne Brady.

There was also a big turnout of Universal executives such as Universal Studios President Ron Meyer, Universal Studios Hollywood President Larry Kurzweil and Universal Parks & Resorts Chairman and CEO Tom Williams (pictured below). The event benefitted the Wildlife WayStation, which helps injured and abandoned exotic animals.

Jackson was not present at the event, but participated via a 3D video introduction that was filmed for the occasion.

The ride, which utilizes a Surround Digital 3-D projection, and transports visitors to a three dimensional version of Skull Island. After donning their 3D glasses visitors get up close and personal with a battle between King Kong and an angry dinosaur.

Universal did not release the cost for building its new 3D centerpiece, but a counterpart ride, "The Wizarding World of Harry Potter," was rumored to cost over $200 million.

It's part of a plan by Universal to try reverse declining attendance at its theme parks. The number of visitors at Universal Studios Hollywood fell from 4.6 million in 2008 to 4.3 million in 2009, according to the Associated Press.

Universal's Orlando resort is trying a similar gambit by launching the "Harry Potter" ride.
