‘Game of Thrones’ Fan Favorite Gets the Last Word and Fans Are in Love

For once, the death of a beloved character has fans celebrating

Game of Thrones Season 7 Episode 3
HBO

The penultimate season of “Game of Thrones” continues flying through plot like fire breathing dragons through Slavers Bay ships. And unsurprisingly in episode 3, “The Queen’s Justice,” more than one longstanding character met their end. But one death in particular left a deep impact on both the show, and on fans.

Warning: Stop reading if you want to avoid spoilers for tonight’s “Game of Thrones.”

At the end of the episode, Lannister armies led by Jaime Lannister easily conquered Highgarden, seat of House Tyrell and home to the last surviving Tyrell noble, Lady Olenna (Diana Rigg). After the battle, Jaime marches up to Olenna’s quarters, where the two engage in a final conversation before, it’s obvious, Olenna is to be put to death.

Olenna asks how it’s to be done. Jaime tells her Cersei had several extremely cruel ideas in mind, but in the end he convinced her to opt toward a kind of mercy. Olenna is given the option to die painlessly by drinking specially-made poison.

Olenna drinks the poison without hesitation. But it’s not her death that had fans freaking out — it’s how she died. In her final moments, she repays Jaime’s mercy with incredible cruelty: she tells him that she’s the one who poisoned Joffrey back in season 4 at the purple wedding.

“Tell Cersei,” Olenna rasps at Jaime. “I want her to know it was me.”

Cue Twitter, which erupted into digital cheers at Olenna’s final, glorious F-You to the Lannisters. Read on for a sampling.

Plenty of other moments had fans freaking out too. Particularly the first meeting between Daenerys and Jon Snow, Sansa’s adventures running Winterfell in Jon’s absence, and a newly-cured of greyscale ser Jorah.

And of course, there was the moment when Daenerys revealed she didn’t watch the finale of “Game of Thrones” Season Six.
