‘Game of Thrones’ Hits New Series High

Lady Gaga’s concert special also helps HBO achieve a particularly robust weekend

HBO's new fantasy series "Game of Thrones" has taken another step toward securing the crown as king of this season's cable programming.

The series hit another series high with Sunday night's episode, with 3.1 million total viewers tuning in between the 9 p.m. airing — which had 2.5 million total viewers — and the episode's 11 p.m. broadcast, HBO announced on Tuesday.

The series, which has been so successful for HBO that it was greenlit for a second season just two days after its premiere, garnered 2.2 million viewers with its April 17 debut airing at 9 p.m., receiving an additional 755,000 viewers in its 11 p.m. re-airing. The series' second episode matched the 9 p.m. numbers, and fell slightly short of the 11 p.m. numbers.

Meanwhile, "Born This Way" chanteuse Lady Gaga did her part to boost HBO's weekend performance. Her concert special "Lady Gaga Presents the Monster Ball Tour," which aired Saturday at 9 p.m., grabbed an impressive 1.2 million viewers.

Now if only Lady Gaga would guest-star on "Game of Thrones," HBO would have an unstoppable ratings blockbuster — and a very freaky bit of programming — on its hands.
