Ever wonder how Kit Harington‘s “Game of Thrones” character, Jon Snow, has managed to survive three whole seasons? Maybe it’s because the creators, writers and producers are eternally grateful to the actor’s ancestor, along with the rest of the civilized world.
“You might have the greatest thing ever in your family tree,” Jimmy Kimmel said on his ABC late-night show on Tuesday. “My family is very, very grateful to your great grandfather on a daily basis.”
“His name was John Harington. He lived in the 1600s, and he invented the toilet,” Harington explained. “Thus why it’s called, the John.”

Harrington can be seen on the big screen Friday in “Pompeii,” while fans anxiously await “GoT” return to HBO on April 6. He wouldn’t reveal any potential spoilers about his character — including whether or not he’ll make it to the fifth season — but he did make sure to emphasize that despite the show’s popularity, there are some aspects of his job that stink.
