Glam rock star Gary Glitter has been sentenced to 16 years behind bars for sexual attacks on three underage girls.

Paul Gadd, 70, was convicted on one count of attempted rape, one count of unlawful sexual intercourse with a girl under 13, and four counts of indecent assault, Sky News reported alongside many other overseas publications.

One of Gadd’s victims was less than 10 years old. According to the conviction, the pop musician crept into the girl’s bed and tried to rape her in 1975. He was also found guilty of attacking two girls, ages 12 and 13, after inviting them backstage to his dressing room and isolating them from their mothers. Gadd denied all charges.

“I have read the victim impact statements of all three victims,” Judge Alistair McCreath said during sentencing. “It is clear, in their different ways, they were all profoundly affected by your abuse of them.”

“You did all of them real and lasting damage and you did so for no other reason than to obtain sexual gratification for yourself of a wholly improper kind,” he continued. “The offenses for which I must pass sentence today took place many years ago at a time when in particular, in respect of one of them, the maximum sentence was considerably lower than that which is now available.”

A Sky News reporter was in attendance at London’s Southwark Crown Court, and said Gadd showed no reaction when his sentence was handed down. When Gadd arrived at the court earlier, he waved at two friends in the public gallery.

Gadd is the first person arrested under local metropolitan police’s Operation Yewtree.
