George Clooney roped Matt Damon into his faux war of words with Golden Globes hosts Tina Fey and Amy Poehler by sending them “a wounded letter” from Damon on his stationary to address to their jabs at celebrities attending the Hollywood Foreign Press award show last month.
Clooney’s “Monuments Men” co-star told David Letterman all about the prank on Wednesday’s “Late Show” (above), and even read Fey and Poehler’s response he received after Clooney sent the fake letter.

“‘If your note is part of some George Clooney prank, as I very strongly suspect it is, you A-list amateurs are going to have to step it the f–k up,’” the comedians wrote. “We are not some easily confused starlets here. We are grown-ass, professional comedians. Please accept this fruit as a token of our sincerity. Best wishes, Elizabeth Tina Fey, Amy ‘Boston’ Poehler.”
Damon described Fey and Poehler’s hosting job as “great,” and noted that “everyone took a hit” from their jokes throughout the show — even him, who they called a “garbage man.”
One of the best jabs of the night, however, was one against “Gravity” star Clooney, a notorious celebrity bachelor.

Fey described Alfonso Cuarón’s space thriller as “the story of how George Clooney would rather float away into space and die than spend one more minute with a woman his own age.”
Damon did not tell Letterman exactly what Clooney wrote in his three-way revenge prank, but that’s okay, because Clooney did at a SiriusXM Town Hall event with the “Monuments Men” cast on Wednesday.
“I sent her a letter saying, Dear Tina, listen, it’s from Matt, and it just says, ‘Look, it sounds hypocritical because I laughed at the jokes about George and Leo, but you know, that’s sort of what people think about them. But when you called me a garbage man, it just seemed like low hanging fruit, it just seemed like an easy joke,” Clooney explained. “And you know, I don’t want an apology, I don’t want anything else, I just want you to know that my kid now calls me the garbage man.’”
“That’s the appetizer,” Clooney promised. “And what’s coming now, the main course, it’s pretty brutal.”
