Setting phasers to burn, eh, Mr. Sulu?
“Star Trek” alum George Takei took on Donald Trump Tuesday, after the President-elect suggested that jail time might be in order for flag burners.
Trump made his pronouncement early Tuesday morning, declaring, “Nobody should be allowed to burn the American flag — if they do, there must be consequences – perhaps loss of citizenship or year in jail!”
Takei shot back that, while he personally wouldn’t torch Old Glory, he supports the right of others to express themselves through flag burning.
“I pledged allegiance to the flag every morning inside an internment camp. I would never burn one, but I’d die to protect the right to do so,” Takei wrote.
The response was a double-dig at Trump.
Earlier this month, after Trump surrogate Carl Higbie invoked America’s Japanese internment camps during World War II by saying there “is precedent” for a Muslim registry, Takei wrote of his experience in just such an internment camp during the war in an op-ed titled, “They interned my family. Don’t let them do it to Muslims.”
